Just what I wanted for a new iPhone. A special “Thank You” to artist ‘Serge Averbukh’ for the addition, at my request, to the design of my Navy rating, the lightening bolts (sparks as they are/were called) in the middle of the CPO insignia. I asked; he came through….When I use my phone, it brings back fond memories of my 20-year Navy career…. Thanks Serge….
The Hawaiian Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus knudseni) is an endangered and endemic sub-species of the common Black-Necked Stilt, numbering about 1,400 in total. They are mostly on Maui, Oahu, and Kauai. They called "Ae'o" and 'Kukuluae'o" (meaning 'one standing high') by local residents. They measure about 15 inches in length and about 6 ounces in weight. The Hawaiian Stilt is black above and white below, with a long, thin black bill and long pink legs. This subspecies has more black on the face and neck that the more common species. They prefer to feed in shallow ponds for insects, fish, worms, and aquatic arthropods on or below the water's surface. This sub-species is endangered because of mammalian predators and loss of wetland habitat.
This Hawaiian Stilt resting on the ground alongside a shallow pond at the Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary, Maui, Hawaii was photographed on 9-3-2017. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR telephoto zoom...

I've had the honor of my bird photos recognized in prestigious competitions including "The Top One Hundred" of the Audubon Photo Contest, the "Honored Top 40" of the Nature's Best Backyards Photography Contest, and included in the "Nature's Witness" exhibition of 47 nature photographs (selected from 22,000 entries to the National Wildlife...
